In your opinion, when should large drafts be started under saddle and harness?
I know they mature much slower than average sized horses. I was thinking 3-4 with very light work until I know the plates are closed for sure.
I’ve already read a bunch of peoples opinions – just looking for more.
I don’t know anything about when to start harness. Barns here start super early but it seems like it’d be hard on their joints.
Yes the barns here start theirs at 1 1/2. It just seemed young just wondering.
I think starting a horse to ground drive can be done as early as 2 years old. If you are going to have them pull a forecart or something like a sled, probably wait until 3 years. I like to have a draft saddle trained before really asking them to do much in harness since it is so much easier to teach “get up” and “whoa” when you’re on their back. So 3 years is the age to start light riding. I’ve never had any problems and I wouldn’t do anything to hurt my horses. I think it’s a bit ridiculous to wait to train a horse until they are 5 years old??? I mean come on. They are more than ready at 3 unless you are going to totally kill them and have them pull timber for 12 hours a day. Hope this helps. BTW, I’ve trained 2 light horses to drive, and 2 draft horses to drive.

Is Harness Racing Fixed?
Watching the trotters or pacers is a long-standing American tradition. After all, the Standardbred is called America’s horse. It was used to pull wagons and get people around almost from the time the first settlers came to this country from Europe. But, today, the Standardbred has a new job: providing the thrills of harness racing.
Some say that harness racing is much easier to bet on, because the horses run more true to form. In other words, the horse that looks like it should win, does win. That may be true most of the time, but sometimes, longshots still come in or horses that should win don’t seem to put forth very much effort.
That’s when the crowd starts to mutter that the drivers are throwing the race and letting someone win, because they’ve all bet on him, instead of on the favorite. Have you ever seen this happen? I have, but I couldn’t say for certain that the driver was trying not to win. Things happen.
One thing I do know is that – at many harness tracks – just about all of the drivers are trying as hard as they can to win, because of the increased purse money. Why are the purses bigger? In a word: casinos. Many track have been bought out by casinos or, in some cases, the casinos have gotten state approval by subsidizing the state’s harness industry with purses and improvements to the track facilities.
This has happened in Maine and also in other states. Horse owners are happy to have casinos down the road, if it will put a new roof on the barn, raise the purses substantially and attract people who might bet on the ponies while they’re at the casino complex.
Is this good for harness racing? The jury is still out on that. One thing that HAS resulted from this though, is what I said about drivers being less willing to throw races. Who in their right mind would risk a large purse by pulling something crooked. It was much different when the purses were smaller.
So, yes, there probably is still some rannygazoo once in awhile. People are human and when there’s big money involved, you always have someone who thinks they can pull a fast one. But on the whole, I think the harness races are a lot cleaner than they were just a few years ago.

Where can I purchase a single large balloon that will make me jump high but not float?
My friend and I really want to combine our savings and buy a single large balloon (preferably helium powered) that attaches to you via harness. Does anybody know where we can buy one or how much they cost? Thanks a ton!
For safety it would have to be helium or hot air (not hydrogen or natural gas) How big it would have to be would depend on your weight, but it would be very big, very awkward, and expensive to fill. If the heavier of you two weighs 150 pounds and the balloon and harness weighs 30 pounds then the volume of the balloon must be

The cost of filling (current price of Crude Helium is $62.25 per 1000 cubic feet http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/energy/helium/helium_operators_information/crude_helium_price.html and it will cost more compressed into tanks) will be over $200 and I don’t think there is a practical way to put it back in tanks.
